The South Yorkshire senior team recently competed in Division 2A of the County Championship weekend and took a jolt in the competition which was staged in the Derbyshire village of Draycott. Team captain Shaun Bibby said “the fittest and strongest team took the title during a crammed weekend of competition, which proved to be of an extremely high standard. Our squad could only manage a draw from the six fixtures played. We had narrow 4-6 losses against Staffordshire and Warwickshire seconds but the other matches resulted in heavy defeats.” Jack Grant (Stocksbridge) performed well registering seven wins from twelve, as did Richard Element who finished with 3/6. Newly qualified level one coach Craig Hastie (Scorpions) finished on 2/6 as did club mate Mark Johnson.
Paralympian Sue Gilroy notched two wins from six and Abbeydale’s Sarah Thorne also registered a win.
Northumberland took the title by a solitary point from Worcestershire.
Bibby went on to say “the county championships committee were trialling a new format which meant that the matches were crammed into two days rather than two separate weekends, which didn’t appear to meet with the approval of many of the team captains”.
