At the first round of matches in the Sheffield Junior league, debutantes Vulcan Birley ‘D’ displayed maturity beyond their years as they took maximum points from two Division Five encounters. The atmosphere in the Institute of Sport was electric as ninety girls and boys from schools and clubs around South Yorkshire, battled for supremacy in the much anticipated cauldron of youthful exuberance and competition. Emmerson Hodson registered a maximum for the Birley boys with wins over Scorpions’ Daniel Heap, Harry Oxley and Alfie Vernon. Joe Stamford weighed in with a brace for the fledgling Vulcan outfit to ensure a 6-4 opening win. In Division Three, the more experienced Callum Hibbert and Toby Hudson were both undefeated as Vulcan ‘C’ powered to an 8-2 victory over Wadsley Owls ‘B’. Jake Shepherd a registered a solitary win to back up the hat trick duo. Following successful debuts in the summer league campaign, Vulcan High Storrs ‘B’ impressed as they made their inaugural appearance in the junior league. Woody Boon and Gareth Pang each scored twice in a close encounter with Birkdale ‘A’ in the second tier. Jake Chan proved too strong for the Vulcan trio as he took a hat trick with consummate ease. However Jack Bourne took a vital singles set for Redtooth to ensure a share of the points in an enthralling contest. Matthew Taylor lodged a treble for Wadsley Owls ‘A’ as they swooped to a 7-3 win over Vulcan ‘B’. Jack Cross (2) and Jason Bingham (1) ensured the victory, as Woody Boon provided the sternest response with a brace for Vulcan. Sam Middleton featured with a Division Three maximum for Top Spinners as they ground out a draw against Vulcan ‘C’ in the second round of matches. Jack Smith took a brace for the Top Spinners to level the match. Toby Hudson led the Vulcan response with a pair of wins which left his team unbeaten on the day. Thanks to Phil Wright and Fay Buchan who year on year jointly organise the event, dozens of youngsters had an extremely enjoyable morning of exciting table tennis competition.
