Week 10 of the Sheffield table tennis league saw Division 6 champions elect Shiregreen D record a 10th straight victory with a 7-3 win at home to Abbeydale K. Tapton A recorded their second win of the season with a 6-4 victory at home to Albert Premier D. Despite a fine Pete Johnston hat trick for Tapton Hill B they were beaten at home 6-4 by Wadsley Bridge C.
In division 5 Wadsley Bridge A lost ground in the fight for promotion as they were held to a 5-5 draw at home to High Green B with John Daniels unbeaten for the away side. Top of the tree Hallam Grange C beat their D team 7-3 and Telecom A earned both points with a close 6-4 win over Northern General D, Ron Firth registering a hat trick of 3-0 wins for Telecom. Vulcan J look to be heading for the trap door after they suffered a 8-2 defeat at the hands of Vulcan K and HSBC’s trio of Zhe Dong, Adam Smithson and Peter Hooton consolidated their mid table position with a 7-3 victory at home against Crookes J.
The top 2 in Division 3 both registered wins, Abbeydale G won 7-3 at Hallam grange B with Simon Chung unbeaten and Clifton A beat Albert Premier B 8-2 at home, Terry Curran and Tony Linggard both unbeaten for the hosts. David Asher’s treble proved in vain as Vulcan F suffered a 6-4 defeat to Hallam Grange A and remain at the foot of the table. Crookes E dismantled Crookes G 10-0 to stay in fourth position.
The division 2 title race is beginning to look a foregone conclusion as Northern General A whitewashed Swallownest B 10-0. There is also a gap appearing at the bottom of the table as bottom club Rotherham Scorpions B lost 9-1 away to Crookes D. The standout game of the week was the clash between Vulcan E and Swallownest A, Vulcan led 5-2 with 3 to play but Steve Needham beat Mark Seddon to claw one back and when Craig Straw beat Helmuth Osbourne to make it 5-4 it left Mick Jarvis needing to beat Eddie Fogg for a share of the spoils, duly oblige Jarvis did with a nailbiting 11-9 victory in the fifth set to take home a point and earn his team a 5-5 draw.
Divsion 1 saw Stocksbridge A, Crookes A and Crookes B all record victories at the top of the table. Josh Walshe knotched a first hat trick of the season as Vulcan A won 9-1 at home to Crookes C and Abbeydale B made light work of two man Vulcan B with a 10-0 whitewash. A Richard Element treble against his former club ensured Albert Premier A beat Scorpions A 7-3.
