As the half way stage of the Sheffield table tennis summer league approaches, the joint leaders in the Premier Division clashed and Abbeydale ‘A’ emerged victorious following their visit to Attercliffe. Vulcan ‘A’ matched the visitors set for set reaching 4-4 with two to play. At set nine, Jeremy Hamshaw claimed his hat trick with an 11-6 win in the decider over Chris Cattell. This was followed by the deciding encounter in which Winston Campbell overturned a 2-1 deficit to defeat Farrel Anthony 4-11 in the fifth set and claim both points for the visitors.
Vulcan fared better on a subsequent visit to Clifton ‘A’ when Terry Emmerson and Cattell both took braces and combined to narrowly win the doubles. Vulcan edged the match 6-4 however Zoltan Kulics claimed “man of the match” with a noteworthy treble.
In the second tier, leaders Albert Premier ‘A’ were pegged back by dropping a home point during the visit of Vulcan ‘D’. Chris Hoole gained the plaudits with a maximum for the hosts but braces from Mark Seddon and Alan Hollingworth ensured the points were shared.
Hannah Folger opened her summer league account with three wins for Tapton ‘A’ over fellow Division Two strugglers Clifton ‘D’. Hannah’s treble was supported by two wins from Ian Geddes who lost out to Bob Vickers in the opening set. Vickers overcame Jan Macierewicz and teamed up with Sam Thompson to take the all important doubles. The points were shared as Thompson and Andy Bailey both got the better of the luckless Macierewicz.
